It did, however, have quite good silences; the backgrounds were very dark. I will generalize a bit and say that solid-state systems may benefit from the gentler sound of the Ikemi, although I suspect that an all-Linn system would also sound very fine with the Ikemi as source, strength matching strength.

Last year I heard the Mimik, reaching the conclusion that it had an ability to draw the listening into the music, but presented an overall quite laid-back, polite picture which placed a big “mellow” word on everything. The vocals here tend to be on the raspy side, but having heard this many times, I believe it to be in the recording. However, the tonal quality and spatial separation on well-produced recordings are spectacular.

It really sounded like the Genki was having trouble resolving everything and presenting each part of the music in its own layer, and instead, mushed everything together to the point where you just felt like it was meant to be played as background music in some bedroom system.

In general, there is a gentle but unadorned quality to music made by the Ikemi. This observation isn’t negative; I consider the lack of coloration in the source a good thing, though it’s foolish to compare the accuracy with other players based on listening alone.

The CD tray is relatively genku, barely taller than the disc except for the faceplate. Use Gemki and light, will fit almost anywhere; remote will control other Linn products too.
